MIAT leases two new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, delivery expected in 2019-2020

MIAT Airlines, Mongolia’s national carrier, has signed long term leases for two new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with delivery expected in late 2019 and early 2020. US Ambassador Jennifer Galt and Scott Grimsby, Boeing Asia Sales Director and a member of the NAMBC board of directors, participated in the signing ceremony in Ulaanbaatar with MIAT CEO Tamir Tumurbaatar in late March. The Canadian Embassy to Mongolia has made it a priority to promote the rights of girls in Mongolia, speaking out against violence and supporting projects related to the annual International Day of the Girl Child (October 11) through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. A new nationwide poll, based on 5000 face-to-face interviews, has been released by the International Republican Institute’s (IRI) Center for Insights in Survey Research. The new survey reveals a decline in the optimism reflected in IRI’s August 2016 post-election poll, and reinforces public concerns over the economy and corruption. Mongolia’s first and only free trade agreement (FTA) is with Japan. The “Japan–Mongolia Economic Partnership Agreement” (EPA) inevitably has had various adverse impacts on exports to Mongolia from the US and Canada, because of preferential tariffs accorded to Japanese competitors of North American companies. Pro bono legal advice is a part of NAMBC Member Hogan Lovells' comprehensive global Citizenship program. In Mongolia last year, as part of its pro-bono (i.e. free) service to the community, Hogan Lovells Mongolia assisted the national chapter of the “Save the Children” international NGO with technical legal review of the draft Law of Mongolia on Child Rights and the draft Law of Mongolia on Child Protection, which earned the law firm a special citation (see photo above).
