Chairman Edward T. Story, Jr., has announced that L. Cartan Sumner, Jr., Vice President for International Government Relations of Peabody Energy, has been elected a member of the NAMBC Board of Directors for a term to expire at the 2010 Annual General Meeting in Ottawa. Cartan Sumner has been Vice President of International Government Relations at Peabody Energy in St. Louis, MO, since October 2007. Sumner previously served as Director of Corporate Development with Peabody from 2001 to 2007. NAMBC hosts ‘Mongolia Young Leaders Forum’ in Washington, DC

On March 23, the NAMBC and the Zorig Foundation USA co-sponsored a reception honoring first Fellows of the “Mongolia Young Leaders Forum” (MYLF), a group of Mongolia's best and brightest who are came to Washington, March 23-24, under the patronage of Ambassador Kh. Bekhbat. Eight outstanding Mongolian students enrolled in top American universities were selected as the first MYLF Fellows. The MYLF is sponsored by the Mongolian-American (MonAme) Scientific Research Center of Ulaanbaatar. Cabinet endorses Oyu Tolgoi agreement, sends to Ikh Hural for approval

On March 2, Prime Minister Sanj Bayar’s cabinet approved the draft Oyu Tolgoi Investment Agreement with Ivanhoe Mines and resolved to present the agreement to the State Great Hural (SGH) for approval. The Mongolian National Security Council also reviewed the draft and approved it in principle. The cabinet authorized the Ministers of Finance, of Mining and Energy and of Environment and Tourism to initial the agreement in behalf of the GoM. Giant Made-in-USA CAT trucks arrive at Ukhaakhudag coal mine site

On March 3, the first two giant Caterpillar Model 785C trucks were delivered by NAMBC Member Wagner Asia to the Ukhaakhudag coal mining project site near Tavan Tolgoi.  Ukhaakhudag is owned by Energy Resources, Inc., a Mongolian company, that recently signed an operating agreement with Leighton Mining Contractors. These first two trucks are part of an initial order of five. Leighton plans to have a total of 11 CAT trucks on site by the end of 2009. Mongolian National Debate Team competes in Washington, DC

The Mongolian National High School Debate Team traveled to Washington, DC, last fall to compete in the annual  international debate tournament sponsored by the English-Speaking Union. Last year, it was held in Seoul. In honor of the national team's first visit to the US, the NAMBC donated traditional jackets embroidered with the national flag and hats hand-tailored by Mongolian artisans working with the USAID-funded "GER Initiative,"  managed by CHF International in Ulaanbaatar. MONGOLIAN PRESIDENT N. ENKHBAYAR (right) presents NAMBC President Steve Saunders (left) with the Order of the Polar Star, Mongolia's highest decoration, at a meeting of the American Mongolian Association in Chicago on October 25, 2007. The President cited Saunders for his contributions to Mongolia-US friendship and improving bilateral relations. Saunders has served as president of the NAMBC since March 1998. During his 11-day visit to the US, President Enkhbayar visited Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Los Angeles.
